The earthquake which struck Syria and Turkey on the 6th February took the lives of Nour’s mother and brother, and nearly her own. When the rescue teams found Nour trapped in the rubble of her home, they assumed she too had befallen the same fate as her family. Yet, through some miracle, Nour was still alive.
Without this incredible rescue team, however, and the doctors who treated her, Nour’s story would have been very different. In order to save the toddler’s life and treat the crush syndrome she was suffering from, her doctors were forced to remove her right leg. Without doing so, the crush injuries caused by falling debris would have killed her.
We are so grateful that thanks to your generosity, we have been able to provide our partners, SAMS (Syrian American Medical Society), with the funds needed to address this vital need. As a result of the funds raised in our Emergency Earthquake Appeal, 4,627 dialysis kits are now available to treat patients in need. These are being used across Idlib and Aleppo in North-West Syrian, in Bab Al Hawa Hospital, Idleb Central Hospital, and Al Amal Hospital.
Despite this, the emergency is not over. Dr Zuhair al-Qarrat, a surgeon in Idlib, said “There is a high mortality rate among patients diagnosed with crush syndrome… we don’t have enough machines or medical resources for all the patients suffering.” Shortages in resources are nothing new in North-West Syria, and it is only with the help of people like you that they can be addressed.
