14 years of conflict in Syria has left the healthcare system in crisis. There is a shortage of medical staff, facilities and equipment, and over 15 million people in Syria require urgent health assistance. Almost half a million children are at risk of severe malnutrition and only 37% of primary healthcare centres are fully functional.
In short, fewer healthcare professionals have been left with fewer facilities and less equipment to treat the deteriorating health of the population.
As Syrian communities begin to rebuild, access to free, high-quality healthcare will be an essential building block for recovery. Basic health services provide a lifeline for people with few other options.
Action Syria is committed to helping Syrian communities access the medical care they need, every day and when emergencies strike.
For 7 years (2017–2024), we worked with the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) to provide crucial and life-saving health services to communities in Al Freiriyeh, north-west Syria. In communities where few alternatives are available, access to these services could be the difference between life and death.
Together, we provided vital clinics and medical equipment to around 25,000 patients a year. We cared for new mothers and their babies, treated chronic health issues like diabetes, provided dental services, and worked to combat malnutrition.
At least three million Syrians were injured during the conflict, and for 86,000 people, these injuries have led to an amputation.
With our partner, Physicians Across Continents (PAC), we have worked to transform the lives of children and adults with disabilities in north-west Syria.
We worked with PAC to provide essential and life changing prosthetics services until May 2025, helping children and adults resume everyday activities — like riding a bike or writing. Alongside this, we provided the physiotherapy and mental health support they needed to cope with their past experiences and adjust to life with their new prosthetic.
