The situation in North West Syria is devastating and the needs are growing and urgent. An area which pre-conflict had a population of 700,000 people now holds nearly 4 million (just picture the whole of Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle combined). With the added destruction caused by increased fighting it is a hell-on-earth for the civilians who are caught in the middle.
Since December 900,000 further people have fled northwards compacting the area near the Turkish border which is not allowing people through. There is literally nowhere for these people to go. It is cold, wet and there are reports of children freezing to death . The massive influx of people in the area places a huge burden on the existing health services and supplies. Since January over 50 health facilities have been forced to close because of the fighting, even as the need spikes. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding right now and it is so important that we do not just look away.
In response we are raising as much as we can to provide urgently-needed medical supplies to mobile health clinics in Idlib and a maternity hospital operating in the town of Afrin . These clinics and hospital are implemented on the ground by our long-term partner SAMS. We have worked with them for the past four years funding a specific Primary Health Clinic. We know their work and we know the doctors, nurses and support staff who risk their lives on a daily basis to save lives. They are some of the bravest people we know.
Please don’t forget to add Gift Aid if you’re a UK taxpayer when making your donation, it increases your donation at no extra cost to you by 25%.
The situation in Syria is volatile and changeable, if we are unable to deliver these funds for medical supplies, they will go towards our work for vulnerable Syrian communities.
