Sounds Folkestone was established in September 2020 as a collective portal for all classical music activity in this Kent town. The Sacconi Quartet are now ‘Quartet in Residence’ for Folkestone and have held an annual Chamber Music Festival in the town of Folkestone since 2007. This filmed performance of Jonathan Dove’s aptly named string quartet Out of Time was produced by Joe Morgan at TMRW CO., and shot in the Leas Pavilion, a magnificent but forgotten and derelict 1902 theatre that sits atop the cliffs. This project was part of a successful campaign to save the building and restore it to its former glory. Before the campaign started, it was earmarked for development into a health club to service new apartments. The campaign has resulted in the building receiving Heritage status (Grade II listed) and requires the developers to restore and renovate the venue as a community arts space.
Folkestone is fast becoming a classical music destination. A number of world-class composers and performers have moved there recently and there’s a great sense that something very exciting is happening, to fully complement the existing visual and literary arts offering that has been key to the cultural regeneration of the town. The Sacconi Quartet has worked closely with Jonathan Dove in recent times, and the composer has been co-commissioned by the quartet and Wigmore Hall to write a new quartet to celebrate the Sacconi’s 20th anniversary in 2021.
