Action Syria Suppers Frequently Asked Questions

Below you'll find answers to the questions we get asked most about holding your own Supper. If anything is not covered, please get in touch.

  • Where can I host an Action Syria Supper event?

Anywhere! From your kitchen table, village hall, to your favourite restaurant.

  • Do I need a food hygiene certificate to hold an Action Syria Supper?

If you’re hosting a one-off Supper, you don’t need a food hygiene certificate to whip up and share delicious dishes. However, it’s essential you handle the food with care and safety in mind. We want to ensure everyone enjoys scrumptious meals in the safest way possible.

Here are some tips for ensuring food safety when preparing meals for large groups:

    • Prepare in advance: Many recipes can be prepared in advance. Just check the preparation instructions and make sure to defrost/reheat properly.
    • Hand hygiene: Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially before handling food. If hand-washing facilities are not available, use hand sanitiser.
    • Clean produce: Always wash fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly before use.
    • Prevent cross-contamination: Keep raw foods separate from ready-to-eat foods. Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meats and other foods.
    • Check expiration dates: Do not use food past its use-by date.
    • Cooking instructions: Always follow cooking instructions and make sure food is properly cooked before serving.
    • Clean and sanitise: After use, clean and sanitise food preparation areas and wash equipment in hot, soapy water.
    • Minimise time at room temperature: Keep food out of the fridge for the shortest time possible before serving to maintain freshness.

  • Do I need to declare food allergens at my Supper?

For your one-off Supper, while allergen labelling isn’t mandatory, we encourage you to provide allergen information (either verbally or in writing). Better to be safe than sorry!

We recommend asking people for any food allergy information in advance, to make sure there’s something for everyone.

  • How do I spread the word about Syria during my event?

The personal element is important. Tell your guests why you were inspired to support Action Syria and encourage them to do the same. You could even ask someone who knows a bit (or a lot) about Syria, has been there, or has reported on it, to speak. Think journalists, writers, artists and students.

  • How should I promote my event?

If you’re looking to host a bigger event, you might be thinking about how you can best promote your Action Syria Supper.

Get your friends involved and ask them to invite their own friends, family, colleagues and local communities to attend, and to help spread the word. Starting planning early can be a great way to have more time for promotion and get more people to attend.

Harness the power of social media, including WhatsApp and Facebook groups, by sharing your event as widely as possible. Get your friends to share too, and don’t forget to tag us on social media.

  • How do I send the money I’ve raised to you?

Once you have completed your event, you can either transfer the donations to us by BACS transfer with ‘Supper’ as the reference or send us a cheque made out to Action Syria with ‘Supper’ written on the back. Please send us an email with your details and amount you have donated, requesting a receipt if you need one.

The address to send the cheque to is: Action Syria, Rich Mix Centre, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA
