A week on from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Syrian Turkish border, more than 36,000 people have been killed with thousands more injured and homeless.
Those who’ve lost their homes the devastating events are still at risk. With temperatures in region dropping to -9C at night, the UN predicts the death toll to double, at minimum.
If hope can be found in such a grim situation, it is in the bravery of our partners and also in the generosity of people like you who are prepared to do something to help.
We have been overwhelmed by your response to our Emergency Earthquake Appeal, which has now reached over £130,000. At a time of exceptional need, this will enable us, with our partners, to save lives.
So far, we have committed £80,000 to our partners Physicians Across Continents (PAC) and the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) for post-traumatic critical care (such as dialysis kits), baby milk, orthopaedic consumables (such as surgeons’ drills), lab consumables (such as syringes) and salaries for doctors, nurses and aid workers.
Medical equipment and supplies are running out fast. The need for these things has increased drastically because of the number of people affected by the earthquake, on top of an already complex humanitarian situation.
With our partners’ guidance we are working swiftly to commit additional funding to further essential needs.
PAC and SAMS are delivering aid across affected areas in the north-west and north-east of Syria, as well as in Turkey. While the complex operating environment (particularly given the destruction of roads in north-west Syria) doesn’t make this straightforward, with our partners expertise and experience it is possible.
