Hands Up Foundation is now Action Syria

Beyond The Headlines - Life In Syria Today

Despite political shifts following the end of Assad’s rule, 16.7 million people in Syria still require humanitarian assistance. 2.4 million children remain out of school, and 90% of the population lives in poverty. This is not the end of the crisis — it’s the beginning of a new chapter. And right now, Syrians need your support more than ever.

At the same time, international aid is shrinking, leaving critical funding gaps in healthcare, education, and basic services. Without flexible funding, Syrians face even greater instability, just when they need support the most. We are determined that these communities will not be forgotten and more than that will have the opportunity to thrive.

In a rapidly changing landscape, slow-moving support isn’t enough. What sets Action Syria apart is our ability to respond quickly and in real time — whether that’s keeping schools open, delivering urgent medical support, or supporting communities facing new challenges. But this is only possible with the resources to act immediately and effectively.

Your impact

A regular gift means we can plan ahead, respond as needs arise, and support Syrian communities for the long term — wherever the need is greatest.

If a monthly gift isn’t possible, a one-time donation can still make a powerful and immediate difference.

Here’s how your support could help:

  • £12.35 could provide a student with a full stationery kit, giving them the tools and confidence to learn.
  • £27.85 could help stock a classroom with books and essential supplies for a week.
  • £46.84 could cover a week’s worth of materials for our prosthetics clinic, helping someone regain their independence.

How we work with partners for long-term impact

At Action Syria, we are loyal to Syrian communities and want our work to make the greatest difference to those in areas that have been neglected.

While needs are vast and urgent, following the political shift in Syria in late 2024, we are reviewing our programme approach. We are talking to our Syrian partners, colleagues and contacts to establish how we can respond where needs are greatest. The situation on the ground is changeable as communities adjust to Syria post-Assad with a new transitional government, and all the opportunity, hopes, worries and challenges that extraordinary shift entails.

We will be flexible and nimble, working with grass-roots projects and organisations in different parts of the country to provide services where there are none and help rebuild. As always, we take our lead from our Syrian partners, who understand the needs and context of their communities better than anyone, even as these change.

In the meantime, we remain committed to education, medical care and emergency response and work with partners for long-term impact. Not just through funding, but by building the skills needed to unlock long-term support and create lasting change. This isn’t just about responding to crisis. It’s about working with Syrians to build something lasting — on their own terms.
